I have been a patient of Dr. Manuel's since 1998. I was in my early 20s then, and was attracted to the cute little house that had been converted into a dental facility, the fresh-baked cookies and coffee in the waiting room. These are cozy details, without a doubt. But what kept me coming back for the past 14 years so far is Dr. Manuel's commitment to quality care, the fact that this is a successful woman-owned business that employs women and minorities, and that the technology and business practices at Espresso Dental have always moved with the times. Over the years, I have noticed too that dental hygienists who do not meet Dr. Manuel's high standards do not stay long. The office staff have always been welcoming and professional--Dr. Manuel's enthusiasm shows in all aspects of this business. And, as a WA State public employee I appreciate very much Dr. Manuel's meeting me as close as possible to where my insurance draws the line.
I don't understand the ratings here so far. I have had 2 experiences with Espresso dental and each were fairly complicated procedures that went completely smooth and painless. I had a crown applied last year. I also had a large filling replaced this morning. Both experiences were met with professional associates and quick efficient service. Dr. Manuel is very informative and has an extremely deft hand in dentistry.
I can only attribute any negative comments here with two common factors about going to the dentist:
Going to the dentist is not necessarily a joy, especially for people who have neglected their teeth for the majority of their lives, which is all too common.
Most dental insurance is generally woefully insufficient and the services and materials are expensive. You are your own best advocate in this country for any sort of medical care.
I will continue to go to Dr. Manuel and suggest that others do, too, regularly to avoid unnecessary pain and keep my teeth in the best shape I can.
Excellent Dental Experience
I want to recommend Dr. Manuel and her staff for an excellent experience. I had to have a crown applied to a tooth I broke which sounded horrible. I hate the dentist as most do but the staff at Espresso made things easy to understand and get scheduled. There was a strong focus on minimizing pain and if you call watching SportsCenter from the dentist's chair a '21st century gimmick' then I am all for gimmicks. Dr. Manuels patience and competence were also exuded through her dental assistant who's ability and assuredness were outstanding. If you live on the Ridge or need a new dentist I highly recommend you try Espresso out.
I've been going here for years. I get great dental care from Dr. Connie and her hygienists, who are very helpful about teaching me the best gum and teeth care. I also appreciate her referrals. My son got an excellent one for a TMy condition he had. Coffee at the dentist is good too! Thanks!
My whole family loves Connie! We have been going to Espresso Dental for 15 years. The small staff is so enjoyable and the service and care exeptional!
I was amazed at the bad reviews, as that has certainly not been my experience! I have gone to Dr. Manuel for over 5 years, and I have had nothing but a favorable impression. For the majority of my visits (2 cleanings a year) there has been absolutely no charge. I had four fillings that needed to be replaced as they were leaching metal into my mouth. The cost was significantly less than other dentists that I checked. I find the office staff to be very friendly and personable, and YES, they give you a latte when you leave. But mostly I go there because of the good care.
Dr. Manuel has provided me with great service for some time now. Today I was browsing through yelp for bike shops & restaurants when I thought I would look at reviews of the businesses I frequent. I was very surprised to read such negative ones about Espresso Dental! So I thought I would write about my experience.
I have found this practice to be very conscientious about appointment reminders, to give an explanation of work needed and its cost. The front desk person is courteous. I have not eaten the cookies, but once had a nice espresso on my way out as there is virtually no wait time in the lobby before an appointment. The business seems clean and has up-to-date equipment. There are TVs for those who would like to watch a movie or show--children particularly like this. Dr. Manuel is thorough, but gentle in the way she handles my mouth and so careful and respectful of the children that they actually enjoy going to the dentist!. I have not felt that she over diagnosis things and she is agreeable if you want work done in stages. She fixed some old dental work (from a prior dentist) that had deteriorated making a strong and smooth replacement. The Espresso Dental hygienists are also kindly, thorough, and gentle when they work. They are encouraging with helpful tips to keep teeth and gums healthy. They do not chide or make you feel bad.
After reading a few of the negative reviews re: Dr. Connie Manuel, I wondered if they were talking about the same Dentist...! I have had excellent care from Connie for the last 8 years. The current staff is friendly and helpful, and they always make time if you have an urgent need to be seen. They go out of their way to make patients comfortable and the experience as pleasant as possible. It's nice going to a small private office (which is actually a renovated house) in a fun neighborhood, where street parking has never been a problem. I believe the prices are in line with average dental costs.
I have been going to Dr. Manuel since she has been at Espresso Dental. I was a patient of the previous Dr. (who started the Espresso part of the practice plus all his staff were licensed massueses, so you could also get a free shoulder massage) and I didn't change. I thought I would check her out. She has been fantastic. She has taken excellent care of my mouth without going overboard and recommending stuff I didn't need.
The hygienist was painless and very thorough.
I hate going to the dentist but knowing I'm going to Dr. Manuel makes it much easier. I live in Everett and don't mind the drive down to her office knowing I will be well taken care of.
I have recommended lots of people to her and I will continue!
I rarely write reviews on yelp and really don't like negative reviews. However, this one takes the cake. If you are thinking of using these people, i would think twice.
First off, when i went into the office the lady behind the desk was hardly pleasant and i felt as though i was a burdon to her. Then as i sit there, one of the other employee's came over and they were whispering to each other like little school girls. Very rude.
Next, i received my report from the Dentist and she pointed out every little speck on my teeth where as most dentists would put a watch on a tooth or tell you that it will heal itself. Not this one, no no no, she will gouge you for anything and everything she can think of. As i questioned her, all she said was that i needed to come back and see her to have ALL your cavities filled. She was almost begging me to come back. Fat chance!
After that, i went up to the lady at the front desk to get an estimate of what my bill would be, should i return for fillings, and she decided that she didn't have time in what i thought was a "don't bother me" attitude.
So then, about 3 weeks later i get a bill from her in the hundreds of dollars. Mind you i have full insurance. So i contacted my insurance company and they investigated the matter and came to the conclusion that i owed nothing. Is this Fraud???? I don't know what you call it, but don't let this lady rip you off. It's unbelievable that her practice would do something like this.
All in all, terrible experience and this dentist should not be trusted. Watch out people or she'll take your money without batting an eye.
After almost 20 years of avoiding the dentist, I decided it was time to have all the problems taken care of. The warm and friendly staff at Espresso Dental took all my worries away. I had to have a lot of work done and felt no pain or anxieties after the initial few minutes! I recommend Espresso Dental to everyone who asks for a great dentist!
I've been going to Connie for over 15 years. She has a very delicate touch no doubt learned from her years as a hygenist. She makes every procedure as painless as possible, unlike any other I've had. I used to dread going to he dentist (who doesn't), but her practice has made it almost festive. Okay, maybe not exactly a party, but at least I don't feel like I'm on my way to an execution. Seriusly, she knows her stuff and is always interested in what is going on in my life. Besides, they have great espresso dribnks and always fresh cookies. Who doesn't like that!
Mountlake Terrace, WA
I can't say enough about Dr. Manuel and her staff. I have been seeing her for 2+ years and have sent two people (One of them being my mom) to her practice. My mom had a dental emergency on a Saturday and Connie came in to help her. THAT is great service!
They are kind, caring and gentle. There is no way I would see anyone else for my dental needs.
Connie has a great crew of super competent and pleasant dental professionals. Parking is easy in a great neighborhood. I look forward to my visits and always come away with happy clean teeth, a goodie bag of dental care products, a latte and a warm cookie. Today i watched Oprah and Ellen kibitzing on the tv above my head while I got my teeth thoroughly deglazed and polished. What more could I want?
I have been seeing Dr. Connie Manuel for 12 + years and highly recommend her practice to anyone. They are professional, prompt, have state of the art equipment like digital x-ray, water teeth cleaning, audio and video for those who like distraction during sessions, etc. They also emphasize preventative care and assist you in developing your own best home practices. Best of all, they put you at ease and make your dental experience almost enjoyable.
It was time to change dentists after 20+ years with another. My husband was one of Connie's patients, as was one of my coworkers. I am not at all disappointed that I switched. Not only is it very convenient, but I love the staff. It's a small practice, and I like that. When my husband had an extraction that caused him some post-procedural pain, Connie called him from her vacation not once, but twice, to see how he was doing. I am delighted with the care we both receive at Espresso Dental!
If Buddha could choose a dentist today, Espresso Dental would be on the short list. Having been blessed with strong teeth and cursed with a fear and loathing of all past dentists, I was persuaded to try Espresso Dental.
My conclusion? If you fear, loathe, dislike or just avoid dentists for any reason, this is the place to go. Friendly staff who explain what is being done, what needs to be done, and the do it quickly, quietly and efficiently. TV is provided as a diversion in the main chair, but I prefer the view of the Japanese Garden out the back window. I feel so relaxed here that I fall asleep while dental procedures are done. Highly recommended as a cure for the dental-phobic among you. Added bonus are the fresh cookies and espresso offered to patients while waiting. If all the dentists in Seattle were like Espresso Dental, we'd all have perfect teeth and smile about it.
I've been going to Espresso Dental since 1998. At first I was looking for something different - something besides the sterile-type of dental office environment. The moment I walked into the inviting lobby, I was greeting with a warm atmosphere, a fire in the fireplace, and an offer of... An Espresso drink while I waited! What a treat.
Dr. Manuel and her staff are fun, experienced, give excellent referrals when I need additional work. My appointments fly by with flat screen TV's, comfortable chairs, state of the art equiment and a fun staff. The care I receive at Espresso Dental is constantly superior, and I trust them to give me the care I need. I wouldn't go anywhere else, and look forward to my appointments!
Forced to seek emergency dental assistance ten years ago, I found myself in the Espresso Dental chair. Dr Manuel and her assistants provided me with quick, surprisingly painless relief. Right away I liked their approach - they're cheerful, matter-of-fact and helpful, never pushy or judgmental. I'm sure they knew I didn't need or want a lecture. :) I also liked the casual atmosphere. The technology is all there, but so is a nice big window overlooking a peaceful garden. Despite my (former) dental phobia I returned to establish a regular care routine.
A few faces of Dr Manuel's 'gang' have changed over the years, but not their friendliness and competency. They're all approachable, and most attentive. Also remaining constant is the attention to details such as special billing needs, insurance plan restrictions, referrals and appointments. I thank a cracked molar for getting me into the Espresso Dental chair, and I thank the Espresso Dental gang for helping me lose my Dental Phobia.
I have been going to Dr. Manuel for about three years now and my twelve year old daughter is a patient as well. I've moved dentists as I felt my previous overcharged. I have had a significant amount of dental work from a very young age and very anxious about being in the dentist chair and rather embarrassed about it. Dr. Manuel's office is comfortable and relaxed and her demeanor is friendly and very warm. The last time I was there, I actually nodded off while they were drilling on my teeth! The addition of her new very capable front desk manager at least a year ago has resolved paperwork issues. I'm not sure how this is considered a gimmicky office, Dr. Manuel offers pretty much what any other dentist does based on what the market requires and what makes her patients comfortable.
I have been a patient of Dr Connie's at Espresso Dental for over 10 years and have been a more than satisfied customer the entire time.
The extras are great, but most important is what they represent: Connie and her staff's commitment to really taking care of the patient.
The office is bright, comfortable and relaxing and the staff always friendly, attentive and knowlegable. They do everything they can to make going to the dentist a pleasant experience. No small feat! And this includes adopting new technologies that ensure less discomfort to the patient. Connie and her staff's commitment to heatlth and preventative care helped me turn around what was becoming a serious gum problem, so that now I pretty much just go in for maintenance.
The flexible hours mean that I don't have to take time off work. Also, my appoinments have always started right on time: a sure sign of a well organized office. In the couple of times I've had an urgent issue I've always been accomodated promtly. Plus I have never had an issue with billing or with my insurance claims.
Based on my experience I could not give this office less than 5 stars. Highly recommended!
I've been a patient at Espresso Dental since before Dr. Manuel purchased the parcatice in 1996. She effectively transitioned my care, and I have had exceedingly good care since that time, despite a number of dental challenges. Connie has provided excellent stanadard and preventitive services, as well as the more involved work I have occaisionally needed, and has been immediately available on the few occaisions I have required emergency or after-hours care. Her staff are well-trained, friendly and professional. I've referred friends often.
I've been a patient of Dr. Manuel for over ten years and have had only good experiences thoughout a long saga of dental work (broke my front two teeth and ultimately ended up with implants). Connie and her staff are all highly professional and they're up on the latest technology and medical knowledge. Ignore the espresso machine in the corner and the plate of cookies, this is a top notch practice for either maintenance or major work.
This place gives you cofee and cookies after you get your teeth cleaned. That should tell you how backwards their service is. They gossiped about people the whole time they were working on my mouth. The work itself was equally horrible. They cracked my tooth doing a filling then made me pay for the crown to fix it and it didn't even totally take the pain away. I am just glad to get out of there with all my teeth.
STAY AWAY FROM THIS DENTIST!!!
I've been going to Espresso dental since 1999. I've referred other friends and family over the years, and they have continued to receive dental care there as well. Connie Manuel is a great dentist and has always seemed prudent and accurate in her assessment of my future dental needs.
I love that this is a small practice in a converted bungalow with semi-private treatment areas. Street parking is pretty easy. Everybody knows your name. It's been easy for me to get in for urgent appointments. The receptionist has worked diligently to make sure my insurance billing was all good, and has coordinated referrals and appointments for me with endontists and other specialists when needed. I've never felt like Connie or her team were trying to rush my appointments or pressure me to buy unecessary gimmicks or treatments.
I must kindly protest Sarah W.'s review. She does state that her experience was 15 year ago, and it bears noting that the ownership of Espresso Dental has changed as has the staff some years ago.
As for James R.'s review, I am perplexed as my experience at Espresso Dental has been entirely different. I've been seeing Dr. Connie Manuel there for about four years now and recently took my daughter there also. In all that time I've received nothing but caring, compassionate, first-rate dental care. Dr. Manuel is easily the best dentist I've ever had - I love her! And her staff are uniformly warm and professional. I've never had any billing problems nor concerns that I'm being wrongly diagnosed and prescribed "unnecessary" treatments. (And, no, I've never had my teeth whitened.) Go see for yourself and also see the review for "Manuel Connie L DDS" in the Oral Surgeons category.
Dr. Manuel has been my dentist for 8 years. She was recommended by a close friend who spoke so highly of her. I was hooked after the first visit. Awesome care, cutting edge technology (digital x-rays, sonic plaque removal, tv's and digital music to enjoy) plus a delish latte on your way out (seriously, they have an espresso machine and make fresh cookies every day).
On the dentistry side of things, I recently got my first cavity (I'm 38). I was scared out of my mind to get it filled. Dr. Manual offered an anxiety script. Didn't need it. The team was amazing from the moment I stepped through the door. The took care of my filling with me only feeling one small poke. They were cautious and attentive through the entire process.
I'm sticking with the great care, friendly and competent staff and great dental technology. The coffee and cookies are definitely a bonus!
I moved to Seattle about a year ago, and I needed to find a dentist. I found Dr. Manuel online, so I went there for my annual cleaning and xrays. They told me I had 13 cavities and needed to have all of them fixed right away. I have had cavities in my life, but never more than one at a time. I asked her to email me the xrays, and I sent them to my old dentist to verify. He said that I had ONE cavity, not 13. I cancelled the appointments I had made for the cavities, and I will never be going back to Dr. Manuel. I know that every dentist has a different range of caution they take when deciding to fill cavities, but I find it hard to believe that her professional opinion would be that different from my previous dentist. I wish I would have read the reviews here before I went because it would have saved me the trouble of her telling me I had non-existent cavities.
21st Century Dentistry: Gimmicks Over Care
I need to replace my excellent dentist who retired in early 07. I consciously neglected scheduling an initiation with his replacement, because I had heard bad reviews. Following advice on some other website somewhere, I found myself a patient of Espresso Dental on Phinney Ridge.
The people are nice there, but the overall air communicates incompetence. My two visits were glittered with accouterments. They have a computer screen running a tooth-whitening ad 24/7 in their front window, and they uphold their name with a shmancy coffee maker in the waiting room. My first minute in the office witnessed the delivery of a fresh batch of Otis Spunkenmeyer cookies! Yay, who doesn't like cookies!?!
To cut to the chase, my experience was far less than ideal. They have all the Buck Rogers equipment and a TV screen to watch when they're picking at your face, but it's all held together with the kind of last-minute attention you get when you move into a rental. The hygienist/assistants are condescending, the front desk is powerless to impact their greedy billing, and the fancy equipment they do have breaks and ruins your life.
Now, the dental care. I have a face full of fillings. Sure I'm not proud, but whatever. Given the fact that I've probably spent a collective week upside down in a dentist's chair, no one has ever mis-picked my mouth and caused as much pain as the collective staff of this office. Very specifically, they caused me more pain than any of the dozen practitioners I've patronized since my youth. At the end of the appointment, where they chastise you and tell you how you should floss every 4 hours, theirs was the first time I left feeling really very insulted.
Honestly, that's all water under the bridge compared to the plan for follow-ups that they handed me. The dentist identifed over $2000 in work to perform, all of which was presented as immediately urgent. I had them do a couple fillings because the year was ending and my insurance was reset, but their continuing billing flubs forced me to a competitor. Guess what said competitor found? No need to follow up on a single cent of the $2000. The crowns I needed weren't needed and the cavities she diagnosed were nonexistent. Surprise! Boy oh boy, who would think that the dentist with the coffee machine and the flat panel TV over the chair would be signing you up for unnecessary procedures?
If you're reading this, and you're like "I know, right?", do us all a favor and don't go to another 21st century dentist. They're everywhere, and many a fool is thinking that they really need tooth bleaching and all that nonsense. My wife is a dental assistant for kids, and they know via their referral network which dentists are in it for their own BMW collection and which are in it for a nice, lucrative, long-term career. Dr. Manuel? Hmmmm. I don't know what kind of car she drives, but I don't really like being diagnosed with illnesses that don't exist and cost thousands to cure.
Bottom Line: Not if you were the last gimmick dentist on earth, honey.
2009 Update: They continued to bill me for services for another year, after I received written confirmation that I had a zero balance. Did I receive those services? Did they remember what the services were? No.
2010 Update: I've been to a 2nd dentist since Connie Manuel, and a 2nd head's worth of x-rays fails to find the expensive procedure necessary. Fraud? You be the judge. I'm glad I didn't follow up with them, and hope you're deterred from doing so if you're reading this.
Dr. Manuel is part of the Espresso Dental Practice, a hip and fun dentists' office (and you probably didn't think there was such a thing). When you arrive, they offer you the hot beverage of your choice (thus the "espresso" part of the name). Dr. Manuel and her female colleagues firmly believe in providing dental services without pain, and they truly care about making sure their patients are comfortable. They have made me feel at ease when getting check-ups and fillings.
After being assured to our face that our bill was paid in full we received a call later that it was not and they would add it to the credit card. That paid, several months later we started receiving bills for another $400.
Would never recommend this place.
